Is retiring at 50 an option?

Retiring at 50 in Ireland is possible — but statistically unusual.  Most Irish workers are still underprepared for standard retirement, never mind early retirement.

The State Pension age in Ireland is currently age 66.  CSO data for 2025 showed that two thirds of workers had some form of supplementary pension coverage, meaning about 1 in 3 Irish workers still rely mainly on the State Pension for income in retirement.  The introduction of Auto Enrolment is to remedy this; however, the Auto Enrolment scheme does not permit retirement before age 66.

For the two thirds of Irish workers WITH supplementary Pensions, to retire early would mean their supplementary Pension would need to pay them an income until age 66.  At age 66, assuming they are entitled to the full contributory state pension, they would receive €15,563.60.
